How the 518 Events tab is made

1084 events are on the calendar right now, from 200 calendars. The biggest: Caffè Lena (116), Proctor's Theatre (46), Proctors (40), Harding Mazzotti Arena (38), Discover Schenectady (35), Spectrum News calendar (35), The Egg (35), MVP Arena (34), Visit Lake George (32), Art in Mind Creative Wellness Studio (30), Putnam Place (30), Empire Underground (29).

Rules this tab follows

• Every headline links to the publisher. The page shows the headline, a line or two from the publisher's own feed and a small picture when the feed has one. Nothing else is copied.
• Events come from the calendars of the venues themselves (Caffè Lena, Proctors, The Egg, MVP Arena, Putnam Place, the Park Theater, Troy Savings Bank Music Hall and dozens more), the tourism calendars (Discover Saratoga, Discover Schenectady, Visit Lake George, Albany.com, CliftonPark.com, GlensFalls.com), Ticketmaster, and the Spectrum News 1 community calendar.
• The calendar is rebuilt once a day at 5 am and looks 150 days ahead (60 for Spectrum). Each event shows until it is over.
• Left out: food and drink specials, trivia, bingo, karaoke and other bar nights, government and committee meetings, and ticket add-ons such as parking, VIP upgrades and season tickets.
• Known venues get their right town and map point whatever the listing said, so a Glens Falls theater never shows as Lake George. Events are sorted into the Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga and Glens Falls areas by county.
• The same event from two calendars shows once. When the copies differ, the one with a picture, a venue or a real start time wins.
• The category (Live music, Theater and comedy, Family and kids and the rest) comes from the words in the title and the kind of venue.
• The admin can remove any event. Your thumbs up keeps an event on your own list and never changes what anyone else sees.

What you can change

• Your part of the region, in Settings, so the front page and the calendar start there. A thumbs up on any event keeps it in a list at the top of the page.
• Text size, compact mode, light or dark, and the order of the boxes on the front page, also in Settings.
• 🔖 Read later under any story keeps it on your own page until you delete it.
• Not in the 518? Settings has a switch that hides 518 News, 518 Events and the weather box.
• An account is optional and asks only for a name and a password; it carries your settings, your Read later list and your thumbs up to every device.
